Trading a .com for an .xyz

There has been some intersting articles concerning the launch of .xyz domains. The domain extension is founded by Daniel Negari who is promoting the domain extension as the next best alternative to .com?  Whether you think this is a crazy idea or not, this is the first CEO that we know of that has directly come out and said that .xyz will be direct competition with the .com extension.

.XYZ depends heavily upon marketing and in our opinion is not that much different than what .PW tried to do with .PRO!

It's really easy to fall into the trap of marketing and both .xyz and .pw ran a pretty awesome advertising campaign that provide a convincing argument to at least buy a few of their domains and develop a few.  What we learned from .pw is what we also want to share with many newcomers that may be thinking that they could be worth money in the future.

Keep in mind that building and marketing a business is challenging and although .xyz or .pw for that matter offer you another opportunity to buy good generic keywords for your business within a totally different extension still presents something that you will need to think about.  New domain extensions want you to believe that that these are good  investments but the reality is you are trying to pick at this point an extension that in its entirety is going to grow some legs and be recognized as a respectible extension that the overall internet community is going to adopt and want to develop on.

.Club has made an excellent entry into the gtld space and has been smart in highligting 50 cent's domain as a fan destination site to help show how domains in the .club extension can be developed.  .club has legitimately skyrocketed to the top of the new gtld charts.

Why has .club ranked so highly so quickly and gained traction where other gtld's don't?

It's most likely due to the fact that the extension means something and adds a more distinctively different element to the domain in its entirety.  .club adds a well known word to the domain name and passes the toilet paper test as most any 'genericword'.club works!

The jury is still out on .xyz but we certainly don't like the reports that are coming out from site like and other recognized domain name websites that suggest that the numbers have potentially been rigged by the .xyz registry handing out domains free to .com owners through an opt-out email link.

Reminds us of the whole fiasco where the former owners of the .pro registry put 40K zip code domains registered for the website and did so for a bulk discounted rate.  Of course .pro has overcome this and has since surmounted the 100K registrant mark on its own but it really wasn't a smart move to use those numbers to help promote activety in the extension.

.Xyz has piled a whole lot of money into marketing and that is certainly a postive to have an active ownership that is actively seeking to expand the registry base for its domain owners to raise awareness of the extension in which you choose to develop a website on.  However, its very early as new gtld's are in the infancy and there are literally thousands of new gtld's coming on the horizon that will all most likely promise to be the next best thing!

In our humble opinion...stick to the extensions that are short, marketable and mean something.  If the domain you buy is distinguishable and unique while at the same time works for your objectives for registering the name...than it's a buy!
